| Notes |
- John's first occupation was as a potato merchant. He had a draught horse and cart and bought bags of potatoes from the Melbourne markets and sold them to restaurants and fish and chip shops around North Melbourne. He also used to go to the Melbourne train station and cart luggage to hotels.
He upgraded to a truck and later on began dealing in used cars and trucks.
He went to Western Australia in 1929 with his second wife Vera and their children Veronica, Jack and Audrey. He started Perth Car Sales which was later changed to Milligan Stree Car Sales, and later still to J.R. Hallam Motors. At this time Vera leased the Milligan Hostel which she operated until she died in 1934. When the lease ran out at the hostel, John bought a house and stables, moving to Belmont after about four years. He later bought in Rivervale.

At the time of his first marriage to Winifred, his occupation was given as "Dealer", living in Carlton. The marriage was "according to the 2nd Presbyterian Church rites". Witnesses to this marriage were David Parker and James Holt.
